Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT), Finland

Description:

Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) is specialized in technology and economics. The research of the Department of Chemical Technology is focused on separation processes with the laboratory of Membrane Technology and Technical Polymer Chemistry (MemPo) being the biggest membrane research unit in Finland. MemPo has over 20 years of experience in membrane separation processes and membrane characterisation. Today, the research is directed to (1) membrane manufacturing, modifications and characterisation, (2) optimization of separation and filtration process (including online monitoring) and (3) membrane separation in biorefineries.

Expertise:

The MemPo laboratory is also part of the LUT Centre of Separation Technology (CST) and the excellent research resources of the CST are available for e.g. membrane characterisation purposes. Sophisticated off-line analytical equipment needed for surface and foulant characterisations are found in LUT. The group has long experience in characterisation of membranes and membrane fouling as well as applying membrane separation for industrial streams. Membrane filtration in metallurgic, pulp and paper and food industry are intensively studied by MemPo. The research has frequently related to somehow extreme conditions (i.e. high temperature, low or high pH, concentrated solutions, etc.).
