Leipzig University (ULEI), Germany

The University of Leipzig (ULEI) being founded in 1409 has recently celebrated its 600th anniversary. In the course of its diverse history, it grew to encompass a wide selection of disciplines comprising almost all areas of knowledge, with a special emphasis on the natural sciences and the humanities. Current top-level research areas at ULEI related to the field of the project include multifunctional materials and processes in the nanoscale, biotechnology, and biomedical sciences. The institute participating in this project is the Institute of Biophysics and Medical Physics (IMPB). It belongs to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Leipzig. Research work in the IMPB is focusing on understanding the physics of complex biological processes and modern technologies applied to medicine.

The project team from Leipzig has pioneered the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technology for encapsulation, release and delivery ranging from small molecules to complex biological polymers including genetic materials. Building principles, transport properties, mechanics, and stability of LbL films and LbL-based composites have been studied in detail. The group employs its experience with LbL towards the engineering of composite nanomaterials for nano- and biotechnology.

LbLBRANE receives funding from the European Comission within the 7th Framework Programme under Grant Agreement no. 281047
