Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC), Spain

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the Universitat Polit├Ęcnica de Catalunya (UPC) is a Spanish reference in scientific development and educational excellence with 117 permanent staff (professors and researchers) and over 80 PhD students. Research encompasses separation and material science, polymer synthesis, risk engineering, reactor technology, etc. The Separation Technologies Group (SepTec) has extensive expertise in various membrane processes and ionexchange/adsorption. SepTec is the UPC liason to Cetaqua, which is a non-profit research centre that formulates, manages and implements research, technological-development and innovation projects in the field of water.

UPC has extensive experience in the membrane processes such as NF and ED at both bench and pilot scales. It has developed the methodology of trace ions to determine the membrane permeabilities to single ions. An automated cross-flow setup is available for the measurements of membrane rejection in NF/RO as well as the analytical equipment required for the precise trace analysis. UPC has developed several novel non-stationary electrochemical techniques for the characterization of thin barrier layers of composite membranes.
